Friday Night Creeps #1

Jessica could hear the wind and rain from our side her apartment moving the trees branches that brushed against her window. Another stormy night in New York City but at least she wasn’t stuck at work. Living in New York wasn’t all that glamorous. She remembered when she was in High School talking about how she was going ot move out of her small town in North Carolina and move to New York. To her credit she did just that. Right after college graduation into a decent job at a finance company. Lucky for her she knew better than to depend on her college’s career services department. She had looking into different careers herself. Figured out how much she wanted to make and what she could do that would help her do a little better than survive in New York. It all paid off and now after 7 years of living in New York she thought about possible moving back home to North Carolina.

“James….hmmm yeah…I can hear you.”

“Yup I’m okay. Just at home with the cat. Nothing big on my end. How are things?” she said as she listened to her on again off again Fuck buddy. Desperate times called for having some alternative arrangements when it came to relationships. Sure some of her friends had kids and just about all of them had gotten married.  Not Jessica…she was lacking in that department according to her aunt.

“No you stay home. Tonight is not a good night.” she answered.

“Are you sure? I could keep you warm…” James said trying to see if this rainy Friday night could be more exciting.

“Yeah I’m sure. Besides you live across town. I’m fine. I’ll see you later.”

“Ahhh okay. Night Jessica.”

“Goodnight James.” she said before she tapped end call on her phone.

The wasn’t in the mood for James. She had more pressing matters. Finding another job or making this side hustler thing work. Sure everything at her current job was okay but she wanted to keep her options open which included finding a way to move to North Carolina. Charlotte was looking better and better. She would be closer to family and possible find someone more serious into being in a relationship. Just all the things would be better is she could make that move but without taking a major cut in salary.

New York might be expensive but generally it had more opportunities and job paid more. She had gotten used to making a certain amount of money and going back to make less was not on her radar. She had ideas for a side hustle using her current skills but was still trying figure out exactly what to do. She was giving herself until the end of the year to come up with some ideas and test them out. The plan was to go full on beast mood during the first part of the year.

But then there was the job options. 2 to 3 years and she planned to be packed up and in Charlotte.

Tap…Tap..Tap…

Jessica was snapped out of her thoughts and turned toward the window. Sure she was close to one of the trees outside her apparent complex but rarely did they wind force the branches to hit her window.

Tap…Tap…Tap…

“Hmm it’s not that windy is it?” she said out loud. She ignored it again and stretched out her legs from under her. Netflix was on her mind but what to watch tonight? Or was it better to hop back on her Mac and do some research for her side hustle?

Tap…Tap…Tap…

But this time the wind had stopped.

“What the…must be one of the squirrels.” She shook her head. The neighborhood squirrels had a bad habit of gathering on her window ledge. They wanted to build a nest there. She has successfully destroyed at least 5 of them over the summer. One night she caught one of them curled up sleeping on the ledge.

The desire for binge watching Netflix faded so got up and walked back to her bedroom.

‘Research Time.’ she thought.

Powering up her computer she got her pen and ideas book. Something was going to come of this. Something had to come of all this.

Jessica began search through forums looking for more ideas or doing more research on others. She had a doc full of links to places she wanted to revisit in her search for making extra cash.

Tap…Tap…Tap…

She ignored it again.

Tap…Tap…Tap…

Jessica looked up from her computer and over to her bedroom window. The tapping sound was now coming from there. This was strange.

Tap…Tap…Tap…
